This was a really cool book C – thanks for picking it! It’s definitely not something I would see on a shelf and think to myself “Hey, I want to read that book” so it was good to have a reason to do it. I’m not generally the kind that enjoys non-fiction self-help-type books but this is absolutely one for keeps. In fact, as I was reading it I was thinking of all the people I wanted to give a copy to. I told Tyler that he should read it when I was done (or rather listen to it on his iPod) as there are MANY great examples/lessons for business-related issues that I’m sure could help him as he learns his new managerial role at work.
I thought Carnegie had some wonderful ideas on gaining trust and throughout the book the one theme I felt he kept coming back to (in varying ways) was to put yourself in the other person’s shoes. First and foremost, before reacting (or overreacting as the case may be) stop and think about what the other person wants, what they’re thinking and feeling and what they need, and then say and do according to their desires so that in the end you both get what you want. I also found it quite fascinating that much of Carnegie’s suggestions were very simple, basic ideas such as to smile, don’t criticize, give sincere praise and appreciation – and that much (if not all) can be tied back to the gospel. Be Kind…Be Humble…Let Us Oft Speak Kind Words…Do Unto Others…Bear One Another’s Burdens. All in all, a very good read and one that I’ll definitely be sharing with other friends/family members!

Thanks so much for starting us off, Heid! I was initially surprised to hear that all the copies of the book in the library system were out - but then I just figured it really did mean we'd picked a great read.
I'd like to encourage everybody to feel free to post reactions as you read - maybe, say, the thing that stands out the most to you in each section. Use this blog to keep notes! I think there will be plenty to share, discuss, and enthuse about!
Mom has suggested that we extend this month's book assignment for another month (through September) and encourage spouses to read it - maybe along with your impressions and goals you could also talk about your guy's response as well!
What think you?
(P.S.A. - For those who might be interested, I just saw this morning that the "Twilight" movie has been bumped up to Nov. 21 for a release date. "Breaking Dawn" aside, I'm still interested to see the movie - I'm guessing it's going to be pretty different from the book!)
